The Wrong Hotel Room

Emma was exhausted when she arrived at the seaside hotel that night. Her flight had been delayed for hours, and all she wanted was a shower and a warm bed. The receptionist handed her the key to Room 407. “Enjoy your stay,” he said with a polite smile.
She dragged her suitcase to the fourth floor, yawning as she opened the door. The room was dim, with the curtains closed and a faint sound of the ocean outside. She dropped her bag, kicked off her shoes, and headed straight for the bathroom. “Finally,” she whispered to herself.
After a quick shower, Emma wrapped herself in a towel and stepped out—only to freeze. A man was standing in the middle of the room, looking as shocked as she was.
“Who are you?” they both shouted at the same time.
“I’m in my room!” Emma said.
“No, I am!” the man replied, holding up his key card. It read Room 407.
Confused, Emma checked her key. It also said Room 407. The hotel must have made a mistake. Before she could say anything, the phone on the bedside table started ringing.
The man answered. “Yes? … Oh, really?” He hung up, then burst out laughing.
“What?” Emma asked nervously.
“They said you were supposed to be in Room 704, not 407. They switched the numbers by accident.”
Emma covered her face in embarrassment, then started laughing too. “Well, this is the most awkward check-in ever.”
He smiled. “Maybe the universe just wanted us to meet.”
The next morning, as Emma checked out of the right room, she found a note under her door:
Dinner tonight? —407.
She smiled. Maybe booking the wrong room wasn’t such a mistake after all.
