The rain lashed violently against the tall windows of the university library, drumming a frantic rhythm that seemed to mirror the chaos inside Emma’s mind. She had only stepped out for ten minutes—to grab a quick espresso from the café downstairs—yet when she returned, her laptop had vanished. The screen saver she had last seen flickering in the dim light was gone, replaced by a vacant desk that looked almost mocking in its emptiness.

That laptop wasn’t just a machine. It was her lifeline: a repository of two years’ worth of painstaking research, drafts of her thesis, confidential interview recordings, and fragments of a novel she had been quietly nurturing. He wore a dark coat though it was warm indoors, and his movements were oddly deliberate. She noticed a faint metallic sticker—identical to the one on her laptop—glinting from the edge of his backpack.

Summoning her courage, Emma approached him. “Excuse me,” she said, voice steady though her hands trembled. “I think you might have something that belongs to me.”

The man froze, then smiled with unnerving calm. “Are you certain?” His voice carried an unsettling charm. Slowly, he opened the bag, revealing not only Emma’s laptop but also several others stacked like trophies.

Emma’s heart pounded, but before she could react, two security guards appeared, summoned by the silent alarm she hadn’t realized the library tables were equipped with. The man’s composure shattered as he was escorted away.

Later, as Emma cradled her laptop, she realized the irony: her loss had forced her to confront the fragility of the digital world she trusted so completely. Everything—her research, her stories, her identity—had been one careless coffee break away from disappearing forever.
