A Rainy Day Without an Umbrella

The first drop of rain landed on my cheek just as the bus door closed in front of me. I stood there, shocked, watching the red tail lights disappear into the distance. My bus was gone, and so was my umbrella—sitting safely on the kitchen chair where I had forgotten it.

Within minutes, the sky opened like a broken faucet. People rushed past me, umbrellas blooming like colorful flowers, but I had nothing. The cold rain quickly soaked my hair, my jacket, and even the pages of the book I carried.

I started walking, annoyed, kicking small rivers that formed along the street. “Perfect,” I whispered. “Just perfect.” But as I walked, something unusual caught my eye. A little boy stood under a shop roof, holding a tiny puppy wrapped in his T-shirt. The puppy was shivering, its fur dripping wet.

Without thinking, I ran toward them. “Do you need help?” I asked. The boy nodded, his eyes wide. I took off my jacket and wrapped it around the puppy. The boy smiled, a shy, grateful smile, and together we carried the puppy inside the shop.

The shop owner gave us a towel and some hot tea. We sat there, laughing at how ridiculous we looked—two strangers, soaked like fish, sharing tea with a wet puppy between us.

By the time the rain stopped, the streets were shining like silver. My clothes were still heavy with water, but my heart felt strangely light. I had missed my bus, yes. I had forgotten my umbrella, true. But I had also gained something more: a memory of kindness on a rainy day.

And somehow, I knew I would never forget it.
